I have been performing as Spunkle since 1997, when I was offered a one-off record contract by Oxford based independent label Shifty Disco. They had heard a tape I’d sent them of my attempt at making music from just one old Amiga computer and liked it so much they made it the August release of their acclaimed singles club (each year, for five years from 1997 to 2001 they released 1000 copies only of a single, pre-ordered by fans via a six or twelve monthly subscription; the Spunkle single, along with a later release by Cody were also rudimentary CD Roms).
From the name onwards Spunkle was always about provocation and experimentation and perversely proved to be a very popular vehicle for my creative output, both in Oxford and the national press. Live performances and further recordings followed whilst I tried to work out what it was all about. I had a lot of fun but after a while I got bored with the limited promise of limitless extemporisation and the problems of performing things in a rock environment.
