For the second issue of our arts journal premier pli we asked contributors to customise a paper toy grid, created by Alex Bermingham. The assembled and photographed paper toys, based on the shape of the plague doctor, serve as artists portraits, solving the mugshot dilemma that inevitably causes contributors to over think their pictorial representations. When we started first fold records, we loved the idea of having a mascot or character that could represent us and do our dirty work, that character became the Doctor. With the June release of our second issue of arts/culture publication premier pli, we thought it was time to introduce first fold books’ very own editor in chief and foldable mascot Mr Edd. Created by the very talented Alex Bermingham, whose latest obsession/passion is, not surprisingly, paper toys.

We have new releases by Arc Vel and Boss Turbo Doesn’t Afraid Of Anything in the pipeline, in the mean time check out their new artist pages. The releases are both really exciting and we are very pleased indeed that Boss Turbo and Arc Vel are working with us.

Here at first fold, live performance has become an important part of our practice as artists working in sound. We wanted to mark this fact by inviting acts that we are involved with to submit a track that captured the raw excitement of live performance. Some of the tracks where captured at our BOYD events, some are studio jams, improvised pieces or intimate recordings with only the artist present, they are all one shot live performances and we would like to share these little gems with you.

BOYD 7 was a bit of a freak. Held at the Bull’s Head in Moseley but this time downstairs. It featured DJ sets by the very fluent Arc Vel, the eclectic Quite Good DJs and the schizoid rare grove fanatics Pierre and Karlheinz. The event was on Wednesday the 4th April not the Thursday as advertised in the international media. We expected it to be completely dead, it actually turned out to be huge fun, a great relaxed atmosphere and truly eclectic mix of music.

The venues walls are gilded and the floors are made of dark chocolate.

Promoters Capsule live up to their tagline ‘Crafting Extraordinary Events For Adventurous Audiences‘ by organising an event for Fierce, Birmingham’s international festival of live art. The event is called Violet Replacement by Grouper, a recording and performing project by Portland based sound artist Liz Harris.

Capsule have kindly asked us to bring a bit of upbeat frivolity to the proceedings, so we take over for the after party with a live set by The Harry Dawes Trio featuring Harry from Pram, Stu from Papa November and Joe Welden From Juneau Brothers. We will also contribute DJ mashups of old favourites and delightful obscurities, sliced, diced and delivered by Pierre and Karlheiz and The Quite Good DJs.

All this is happening on Friday 30th of March 2012 at Vivid.
