When we started first fold records, we loved the idea of having a mascot or character that could represent us and do our dirty work, that character became the Doctor. With the June release of our second issue of arts/culture publication premier pli, we thought it was time to introduce first fold books’ very own editor in chief and foldable mascot Mr Edd. Created by the very talented Alex Bermingham, whose latest obsession/passion is, not surprisingly, paper toys.

Here at first fold, live performance has become an important part of our practice as artists working in sound. We wanted to mark this fact by inviting acts that we are involved with to submit a track that captured the raw excitement of live performance. Some of the tracks where captured at our BOYD events, some are studio jams, improvised pieces or intimate recordings with only the artist present, they are all one shot live performances and we would like to share these little gems with you.

Please feel free to download our Easter Egg full of surprise, charm, naivety and mad skillz, tell your friends and feel free to share the joy!

BOYD 7 was a bit of a freak. Held at the Bull’s Head in Moseley but this time downstairs. It featured DJ sets by the very fluent Arc Vel, the eclectic Quite Good DJs and the schizoid rare grove fanatics Pierre and Karlheinz. The event was on Wednesday the 4th April not the Thursday as advertised in the international media. We expected it to be completely dead, it actually turned out to be huge fun, a great relaxed atmosphere and truly eclectic mix of music.

A decent crowd for a wednesday night and the Bull’s Head, Moseley is such a great venue

BOYD’s guilty parties Ben, Stu, Joe and Rachel follow a strict routine of:

01. find odd ball band
02. try to convince them to play for free
03. offer free beer
04. get excited about lineup
05. promote inefficiently
06. get irritable whilst setting up event
07. apologise to each other
08. listen, drink and nod to each other
09. say how much fun it was
10. tidy up and think never again…

We have a just a handful of Magnetophone‘s limited CD Wires And Traps EP left, once these are gone we will issue the release as a non limited digipack featuring the download art by Gareth Courage you can see below but we want to do that once the very last current edition is sold. The download version of the EP is £2 GBP, cheaper than iTunes and co. so if you are getting your Magnetophone fix buy from first fold directly

Magnetophone bring their unique vision of electronic music to First Fold with this carefully structured EP, each track features a different acoustic instrument as a musical base, created as melancholic Steve Reich inspired arpeggios, the songs then build up with ever changing vocal phases, swirling synthetic sounds and expanding melodies, that culminate into the finely crafted electronica we have come to expect from Magnetophone.

Track Listing:

1. Buried In The Ground
2. Easy When You Know How
3. Earth Quake Stomach Ache
4. Wires and Traps

Available to Download
